Communal Living, Going “Off The Grid” and Living through Hard Times: Part 1   Leave a comment

What is Coliving and what advantages does it have? - Iberdrola

It goes without saying the Global Pandemic was a wakeup call for the entire world but no places more than those who live in densely populated areas–cities. The last 100 or so years saw a concetrated and purposeful effort by most people in developed countries to move into cities mostly for economic reasons. Living in a major city does have obvious advantages, yes and it also has obvious disadvantages.

The ongoing Pandemic in progress revealed just one of the many big disandvantages to living in a major city: Disease can quickly spread. I live in Boston but I live in a suburban area area of the city right on the edge of the city’s boarder with a Dedham, MA. Literally go three blocks and you’re no longer in Boston.

I’m gonna split this into four parts across two posts: Communal Living in Rural and Urban Areas (2 separate sections), Living Off the Grid and Living Through Hard Times. The first two parts assume you are willing and able to relocate from where you currently live. Both have aspects of each other mixed in though the first one requires 2 or more families or households coming together while second one is really meant for one household or family. The third part is for those who live in urban areas and are just not able to relocate at all.

This post is written with the U.S. in mind but if you’re outside the U.S., you can still use it as a point of reference since it will contain mostly general info. None of these are to be confused with Congregate, or Assisted Living. That is specifically for Elderly or Handicapped/Disabled who are either unable to live on their own or need support that prevents them from living on their own.

Ok first things first you need to start doing research on rural areas starting in your state. If you live in Connecticuit, New Jersey, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Delaware or Maryland you should be looking at neighboring states (Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, etc.) or further away. Those first six states are the smallest in the U.S. so if you live in them, it’s just best to just look at other states. The more rural, the better. For those curently living on Hawaii, either go to the Continental U.S. or go to Southeast Asia. I’ll get to this in a bit as well. For those in Alaska, you’re basically fine to stay there.

Factoring a few things I’ll get into in just a bit, these 12 states are the ones I highly reccommend you look at if you currently live in or very close to a major city:

  • Maine
  • Vermont
  • Utah
  • Wisconsin
  • Nebraska
  • Minnesota
  • Kansas
  • Wyoming
  • Montana
  • Iowa
  • Idaho
  • Alaska

I factored a variety of things in this list, the biggest among them the costs of buying land, ready access to natural resources and the viability of going “Off The Grid”. These states are just collectively the best ones depending on where you might currently be in the U.S. I you’re open to going to Alaska, you can basically disappear without a trace. To a lesser extent this is also true of Maine, Minnesota and Montana as well.

Most of these states are in the middle of the country. Of them, I am partial to Wisconsin and Minnesota simply because the are on The Great Lakes. That’s the world’s largest body of freshwater in the world. Most of the other states are almost giving land away.

You’ll want to do your research in short since these days, you never know who owns what. More so if we’re talking about land owned by a company. It’s much more complicated than dealing with a landowner who is a private citizen to say the least.

If you live in or near a major city in these 16 states, you should look at rural areas within the state first before looking at the above list:

  • Washington
  • New York
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • California
  • New Hampshire
  • Pennsylvania
  • Indiana
  • Illinois
  • Arkansas
  • Oregon
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • North Carolina
  • West Virginia
  • Colorado

…I live in Massachusetts and I also live in Boston. I am looking at the Southeasten part of the state as well as the middle of the state to move to. I don’t want to be too close to Springfield in the western part of the state since it’s basically “West Boston” (and I’m sure folks who live in that part of the state would LOVE for the state capital to be moved out there.

Boston is third in the U.S. behind New York (#2) and San Francisco in terms of the cost of living. Things start to become more affordable the further from Boston you go but in exchange, you need to either own a car or know someone trustworthy who can help you get around. You can get away with not owning a car in the Boston area because of the MBTA but not as much outside Boston and the surrounding cities and towns (Cambridge, Quincy, Braintree, Brockton, Newton, Revere, Chelsea, Somerville, etc.). I had my Learner’s Permit two years ago but it recently expired. I plan to apply for it again in the near future.

Moving on, most of the states listed have at least one major city in it. If you live in the New York City, you want to look at upstate New York before you look outside the state. Same if you live in LA, San Francisco, Philly, Chi-Town, Seattle or Indianapolis among others. You want to be looking at rural areas in the states those cities are in first before you look elsewhere.

With most of these states, you can fly under the radar. You also have the added benefit of having a major city in most of these states you can travel to if need be. Like the first list, all of these states have land you can use to grow your own food and that is an absolute must for everything in the next three section.

These 14 states you absolutely want to either avoid or leave if you are a certain race, hold certain political views or would have to deal with severe weather disasters each year:

  • Texas
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Alabama
  • Tennessee
  • Kentucky
  • Virginia
  • South Carolina
  • Louisiana
  • Missouri
  • North Dakota
  • Arizona
  • New Mexico
  • Nevada

I have no problem saying local politics, laws and history were the biggest factors for most of these states being on this list despite the low costs of living and loose regulations on Living Off The Grid in them. The first 10 you absolutely want to avoid moving to if you are not White. I’m just gonna put it like that.

No disrespect intended to people of color who live in those first 10 states but they are still controlled by sins of the past. Both of the Dakotas have Native American Reservations in them but out of fairness to the Native Americans who live there, it’s hard for me to justify reccommending it. They’ve had much taken from them to say the least and the last thing they need is the mostly inhospitable land they were given to exist on being taken from them. I didn’t include South Dakota because Native American Reservations are not as concentrated as North Dakota first and open land not privately owned if it’s not part of a Reservation is easier to find in South Dakota second.

Arizona and New Mexico have the two big problems of being on the southern boarder and being mostly desert or wasteland. Yes you can practically disappear in both states but they along with Nevada require quite a bit of investment to live in the middle of nowhere longterm. Nevada has Las Vegas and Reno, were most of the state’s populations are concentrated working against it. Outside those two cities, most of the state is desert or wasteland and to live in the middle of nowhere, you’ll need to be making huge financial commitments.

The only two things the first 10 states have going for them are plentiful land for agriculture and low costs of living. If not for the politics, I would have reccommended them in the first two lists but I can’t.

If you are in the U.S. and you’re open to leaving the country, these 16 countries are worth looking into:

  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Japan
  • The Philippines
  • South Korea
  • New Zealand
  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Argentina
  • Kenya
  • Liberia
  • Ghana
  • Denmark
  • Norway
  • Holland
  • Finland

…For all the closet racists like to talk trash about people coming in the U.S. Southern Boarder, I do believe at some point in the future we WILL see a mass migration of Americans flooding across the Southern boarder into Mexico looking for shelter. I do believe that time will come sooner than later personally. It will then be a question of weather or not Mexico will allow it or give the U.S. a taste of its own medicine which they would have every right to do.

Canada is the only overland route to the U.S. state of Alaska so unless you fly, you will have to pass through Canada to get there. Outside that, most people forget that around the time of the 2004 Presidental Election Canada started to offer a sort of fast-tracked immigration process for U.S. Citizens. The media covered this briefly but shortly after Trump won the 2016 Presidental Election, some people with Refugee status fled to Canada amid fears Trump would revoke their status as Refugees and in some cases, revoke their citizenship if they were naturalized. Their fears were proven accurate as Trump revoked Refugee status or citizenship from literally millions of people mostly from impoverished countries.

The Philippines would require quite a bit of financial investment because it is an impoverished country. Many Filipinos travel abroad to find work so…yeah. You would need to secure stable income as well as agriculture. It would be reccommended you pair with a Filipino family or two to make things work. Same With Liberia, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya and Argentina.

The European countries rank among the best in the world to live. Brazil, like The Philippines would require doing a bit of research in advance depending on what you may be looking to do. South Korea and Japan have tough immigration requirements but if you can secure citizenship in one of them, you will be access to help getting started up. South Korea might feel like an odd choice since it’s boardered by North Korea but China and the U.S. are both acting as buffers to keep that country safe.

These 16 countries or Regions you absolutely want to avoid moving to if you’re open to leaving the U.S.:

  • Anywhere in the Middle East
  • Eastern Europe
  • The West Indies/Carribbean
  • India
  • China
  • Russia
  • Egypt
  • Libya
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Sudan
  • Ethiopia
  • U.K.
  • France
  • Malaysia
  • Indonesia
  • North Korea

It goes without saying with most of these countries, simply being from America makes you a target. As for why most of Europe is listed, it’s too densely populated first and you never know when war will break out second. It’s just not worth taking the chance. Same with the West Indies and The Middle East. It’s just a simple matter of personal safetly and most of these countries are very hostile to foreigners in general.

…All that said. Now lets talk about Communal Living.

Communes are making a comeback for older residents | Considerable

Communal Living, or Coliving involves a group of people with common beliefs coming together and living together, usually in a Rural area. That’s the original version. The Urban version, which is more recent involves separate bedrooms but shared common areas. This assumes you go the Rural route though I will talk about the Urban version a little as well.

It’s highly reccommended you team up with 2 to 3 families who will live on the land and take care of each other. It will basically be a village. Make sure whoever they are can be trusted first and foremost. More so if you hold certain political, cultural or religious beliefs that could make you a target for persecution. You will need to make sure everyone is vetted since you will literally relying on each other to survive. Disagreements are one thing but you don’t want a traitor or informant living with you to be direct. More on this in the last section.

Once you have secured land, you will need to build a house to live in if there isn’t one present already. Either one big enough for you and those who will live with you or each family has their own dwelling–house, cabin, whatever you want to call it. Federal Laws require running water in a dwelling of any kind for sanitation purposes. On top of this, each state has their own regulations that can make it easier or harder to “Unplug” from government or company owned water and electric utilities.

On that note: Contrary to popular belief by some folks, it is NOT illegal to live off the grid in the U.S.. It just requires doing your research since like I just said, some states make it harder than others to do so. Indoor plumbing is an absolute must for sanitation purposes in all 50 states. That includes a working toilet and running faucets. You will need to do your research on the regulations for the state you’re in or the state you plan to move to.

As for electricity, you have three options: Solar Panels, Wind Turbines or Hydroelectricity. It’s highly reccommended you have a combination of at least two depending on where you are. If pressure from a waterfall, stream or river is strong enough you can set up a Hydroelectric generator. Having batteries to store the power would great especially if there is either a mechanical problem or you temporarily lose the ability to generate power.

The funny thing is if you stay connected to the electrical grid while generating electricity on your property, you can be paid for some of the excess electricity. This is already the case with many who have Solar Panels or Wind Turbines on their property as their primary home power source. You’ll be paid or given a credit for a portion of the excess electricity. So, you’ll actually profit from your own power source. Pretty cool, yes?

Electronic communication…that depends on weather or not the internet is still accessible or not. For the sake of this we will assume it’s not. At the very least, you should try to get a localized phone network set up that will cover at least your propety. This requires specialized knowledge that includes installing the necessary hardware, structures and equipment. Ideally, this would be done before internet access is lost.

If internet access is still available, you should still set up a personal secure personal network that can’t be accessed from anyone outside your network without the credentials. Having your own servers to store data in advance also means you can download or back up helpful information from across the internet that will be lost when it goes offline. There actually is a handy website called The Internet Archive. You name it, they got it. They are dedicated to literally backing up the ENTIRE internet and everything on it. I can confirm they even have the old Serene Adventure website AND the old forums on that note.

Anyways, communication will be more important. If you have someone with the skills, you might be able to make it so cellphones can be used while on the property by connecting to the local network that was set up so you can talk to each other when regular service is lost. That way, at least you can still talk to people you know while you’re in range of the network. A local network means you can still access information and data on your servers instead of the internet too.

Next, let’s talk about creating and maintaining your own renewable Food Sources. It’s cliche but you will be growing most of what you eat. You don’t need acres and acres of land but the more ariable land, the more food you can grow on it. You definitely want to be able to grow enough food to not only live off of but put some in storage, sell or trade as well.

With Fruit Trees, you need to do your research as they all take at least a few years to start bearing fruit. You can buy saplings or mature trees to save some time but it won’t be cheap. We’re talking minimum $50 each for Apple trees to give you an idea. Buying fruit trees is probably the best method for those who are starting out and more so if you either don’t have a lot of skilled hands or don’t have a lot of land for growing. Fruit trees last a few decades so it’s reccommended you start planting replacements about halfway through

Building a Greenhouse means you can grow food out of season and all year round regardless of the weather conditions. In exchange, there is an increased power and water cost for just the Greenhouse that needs to be planned for. You’ll want to set up standalone solar panels for just the Green House if possible. Once you have a Green House up and running, you can grow prettymuch anything and is worth the added costs if you plan to source everything you eat.

As for meat, eggs and dairy. Buy chicken and cows to source eggs and milk from. You can research how to turn milk into butter, cream, cheese and yogurt among other things. If you or a member of your Community either doesn’t have the skills, doesn’t have the equipment or just doesn’t feel comfortable doing that you’re better off buying animal byproducts if possible. Of course, you will also want to learn to make your own clothes too.

As for meat. If it’s domesticated animals, you need to learn how to both humanely slaughter an animal. You will also need to learn how to safely butcher an animal and drain the blood from the meat. With birds, you will need to learn how to defeather it. These steps are done for you by the time you buy it in a store so…yeah. If the idea of killing an animal let alone then having to butcher it for food makes you feel uncomfortable or squeamish, maybe it’s time to consider becoming a vegetarian. It’s not for the faint of heart and certainly isn’t pretty.

As for defending your Community. It goes without saying your biggest threat will be other humans followed by any known wildlife in the area. A combination of fencing and walls are a must. If you have the money and the means, install closed-circuit cameras as well. Every able-bodied person in the community is part of the defense force. If you have cameras installed, that helps cut down on the need for 24/7 patrols. Have lethal force as part of your arsenal if need be but use only when necessary.

As for Medical and Health Needs. You will need a few people who either have medical training or can learn detailed medical info if possible. If you can stock up on hospital-grade medical supplies, medical equipment and medications that’s even better. A room of one-story building will be designated as the infirmary. If you have access to a medical facility in the area, that’s great. Otherwise, you want to make sure your on-site medical capabilities can handle prettymuch everything imaginable including major surgeries and quarantines if need be.

Speaking of. If an infectious disease breaks out in the Community, Patient Zero should be immediately quarantined along with everyone who was in contact with them. The rest of the Community will need to adjust to make up for the reduced manpower or other roles they would lose due to those under quarantine. If someone dies of an infectious disease, the body should be cremated or buried as quickly as possible. In addition, everyone who handled the body should be quaratined as a precaution. Just like the current Pandemic, Quarantine is to protect those who are healthy from getting sick.

If your food sources get contaminated or infected, they should be destroyed to prevent healthy people and animals from getting sick. Infected livestock should be killed and the bodies burned. Infected fruit-bearing plants, vegetables and other plant-based food sources should be destroyed by burning as well.

Infectious Diseases aside, when someone dies the body should be buried or cremated for obvious sanitary reasons as soon as possible. Corpses are swimming with bacteria after all. A Medical professional and a leader of the community should fill out a Death Certificate for the deceased even if there is no functioning government. You want to make sure you have a written record of the death for the purposes of record keeping.

About trash and waste. Human and Animal waste should be either used as fertilizer or buried. Food waste should be composted as much as possible. The rest of the food trash can either be fed to animals, burned or buried. Anything non-food that is biodegradeable should be recycled, salvaged or repurposed as much as possible. Get as much unreusable waste as close to zero as possible.

We’re assuming there won’t be a trash pickup and it’s unlikely you’ll want to drive your waste to the nearest dump or designated dumping area every week. If you want to designate a spot on the property for that purpose, make sure it’s far from both living areas and food sources. Trash in an open area will attract wildlife, vermin and possibly other humans so you want to keep it on the edge of your property if possible. If there is trash pickup available, feel free to disregard this paragraph!

Before I forget, let me talk about Education and learning. It goes without saying kids will need to learn along with adults survival skills. As for formal education, textbooks will need to be acquired in advance. it won’t be as formalized and structured as it is in most of the world now but kids should be able to learn at their own pace. There should be a greater emphasis on survival skills however.

Co-Living Spaces Claim a Bigger Place | City of New York

Wait, I forgot to talk about the Urban version didn’t I? Let’s get to that now. The obvious big difference between the Rural and Urban versions is the area. You have less room in an urban area to work with and certain things will need to be done differently depending on how much space you have.

For the sake of this sake of discussion, we’ll assume your community has bought or taken over a building the size of this one. At a glance, it’s a 6-story building and likely has a below-ground floor or two. A building of this size can probably safely hold 200 to 400 people without crowding rooms. You would still need to set up facilities to be as self-sufficient as possible though.

  • We will assume water is taken care of from when it was first built and will be a non-issue. We will also assumes shower and bathing facilities will be installed on each floor.
  • Solar Panels will be installed on the roof as the main power source though it will still be hooked up to the city or town’s grid. Small wind turbines will also be installed on the roof for additional power.
  • The same principles for a local network apply. Most offices these days already have an internal network on that note. Someone with the skills can reprogram an existing one to work for your needs.
  • As for Food Sources. You have no choice but to convert rooms into greenhouses as well as build raised beds of soil on the roof. If you can get your hands on livestock, you can house them in a few rooms. Just make sure you are able to get them some time outside and some exercise too.
  • Defending a building like this means barricading all entrances and exits as well as all ground floor windows. It goes without saying Closed-Circuit Cameras are a must as well.
  • At least half a floor is set aside for medical facilities. This also assumes a room or two is used for surgeries and there will be a separate maternity ward. If disease breaks out, the infected should be quarantined and the rooms should be disinfected afterward.
  • When someone dies, we will assume the building has two basements. Sections of the second basement will be set aside for burials. If the ground is reinforced, you will need build coffins with available materials and seal it shut. Otherwise, bury it. The alternernative is using the furnace to creamate the body.
  • Trash and waste is treated the same as in a Rural area: Keep it as low as possible. This building appears to have a chimney which means it has a furnace you can use to burn things.
  • Education is treated the same as a rural area prettymuch. Focus on survival skills though kids should be able to learn at their own pace.

..Whew. That covers most of the major stuff involved with Community Living. There are some more details which will be covered in the next two sections. These first two sections ended being much longer than I expected so I am going to put the other sections in a separate post. I actually revised this post before posting it. Part 2 will be the next one you see after this one. It’s so important, I will post both parts on three of my blogs.

Times like now show why Physical Media is more important than Streaming Services   Leave a comment

Decluttr Review: How I Made $100 Selling Used CDs and DVDs - Clark ...

The simple fact of the matter is the Global Pandemic in progress has proven that for those who do not have a strong and stable home internet connection, streaming services are not a viable option. Not just in developing countries but especially in modern countries.

Netflix was the first premium streaming service and it went on to popularize streaming services overall worldwide. It is easy to forget originally, Netflix was an online movie rental store. They still offer that now in additon to streaming actually. That was how I first started using Netflix about 10 years ago.

Chapter 8 - ~ Computer Literacy For The Clueless Minds ~

We didn’t realize it at the time but the introduction of the MP3 Player (iPod and other devices), SD Memory Card and Portable USB Drives eliminated the need to travel with portable CD Players and 3.5 Inch Flopp Disks. I actually used Floppy Disks until I got my first USB Drive in 2004. It was  I got my first-ever Music CD in 1999 and bought my last one in 2014. The Album I got in ’99 was a mixtape with top songs from that year. The album I got in 2014 was Michael Jackson’s Xscape. I remember because the following year, Best Buy announced they would no longer sell CDs.

…Now would be a good time for the physical media to be reintroduced to consumers worldwide and mainstream once again. Why are the movie industry, TV networks and video game companies focusing so heavily on streaming and digital distribution? Because the demand is there, that’s why.

Digital Distribution and Streaming is also cost effective for both sides: Companies don’t need to mass produce  physical media and consumers don’t need to pay as much for a digital copy of the same content. Even better is unlike physical media, digital media is never out of stock and is always available as long as the service provider is…online. I hope folks can now start to see where I’m going with this topic.

I’ll put it like this and this is conspiracy fact: Only a few people, companies and organizations control most of the world’s resources and technology. Satellites, Networks, mass media and so on. I think I mentioned this several years back but about 6 people own at 70% of what the world watches on TV and ALL of them live in New York City. I am mean who owns specific networks, network affiliates, studios and so on. A literal handful of people have THAT much power and influence over what what most of the world sees on TV every day.

What’s that, you say? “I only get my info or entertainment from the internet or Social Media?” LOL, you’re not safe either. Internet and cellphone service providers are owned by SOMEONE and regulated by the government. So, even if you use End to End Encryption like grassroots organizations and Slacktivists championed 8 years ago, that still doesn’t solve the problem of the phone service itself being controlled by a company to use their service.

Regardless of what our ideology, religous beliefs or thoughts for the future might be, I’m just gonna put it like this in short: The powers that be WANT you to be dependant on them for everything. When you are, they basically own you. They already control governments–and they’re open about it now–so…yeah.

Just Facebook and Twitter each have literally millions of people worldwide enslaved and they don’t even know it. Why else do you think Mark Zuckerberg would say on multiple occasions in interviews when asked that he would not allow his daughter anywhere near Facebook? He has said on the record quite a few times he almost never uses it himself and he created it. THAT should tell you something right there: He won’t use it himself and HE made it but he’s perfectly ok with millions of people worldwide being addicted to it. That should tell you how dangerous Facebook is as a Social Media platform. Twitter already has a reputation of being known as a haven for online bullying and isn’t all that much better.

I grew up when the digital age came about but it’s ironic. Technology has made it easier for people to connect but it’s also made it far easier for people to isolate themselves. Everyone wants to use Technology a certain way and until the internet, that was is pretty fair expectation. I mean the expectation “I bought it and I’ll use it any way I want to use it.” certainly DID apply to electronics like it applies to everything else.

The internet changed everything. Anyone who owns a computer, tablet, MP3 Player, any video game console made after 2002 or a smartphone should already know what I’m talking about: system updates, security patches and upgrades. You get them digitally via an internet connection. Periodic updates help ensure the device stays stable, safe, secure and most importantly runs as intended. There’s no getting around that in short.

These days, enough Windows Operating Systems are in circulation for folks to basically pick their favorite one and manually downgrade it if they have the knowhow or are willing to learn how to do it. When Microsoft announced they would no longer support what many consider the best Windows OS ever–Windows XP–it basically became Freeware overnight. Freeware is software the user can legally modify and redistribute and it’s usually for free, hence the name. Programmers wasted no time stepping in to upgrade the OS to efficiently run on newer hardware while retaining everything most liked about it.

Nintendo was the last console maker to enter the world of online gaming with the Wii, which was released back in 2006. Microsoft and Sony are both very open to making digital-only consoles. By that, I mean consoles that you can’t play physial video games with and would have to download games digitally to the console. The main reason their upcoming Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles will not be digital-only is because consumers are against it. Sony tried streaming games with its recently discontinued Playstation Now early in the PS4’s lifespan but it showed gamers would rather not rely on an internet connection to play console video games.

That brings me to the other issue all these devices also have in common: Storage Capacity. The bigger the storage capacity, the more stuff you can fit on the device. Memory cards and USB Drives can give you more storage if they are supported as well. Cloud Storage has actually been around for 20 years but it didn’t become common until about 10 years ago. Cloud Storage allows you to address storage capacity and backup issues by uploading files to a server that you have an account with. Google Drive is the most popular one for example and it’s also free.

The thing is, Cloud Storage has the same caviat as Streaming: You need to be connected to the Internet in order to make use of it. No internet connection, no Cloud Storage. Anyone who’s followed half my blogs knows I have subscriptions for several streaming services including Rakuten Viki (Asian Dramas), Crunchyroll (Japanese Anime), Amazon Prime Video and WWE Network. You can only use them if you have an internet connection.

While it is true you can stream Rakuten Viki and Crunchyroll without a premium subscription or even an account, the subscription grants specific perks including removing Ads and HD Quality viewing. Amazon Prime Video is actually a perk included to those who have an Amazon Prime subscription. It grants you access to a moderately sized library of Movies and TV Shows you can stream. A WWE Network subscription grants you access to over 30 years’ worth of TV and Pay Per View programming, original programming and Live Programming as it airs.

…Without an internet connection, you lose access to these streaming services. When you own a physical DVD, CD or Blu Ray, you can freely watch or listen as long as you have a device that will run it. Most computers run both DVDs and CDs on that note.

Every Sony and Microsoft home game system can play CDs and in the case of the Xbox consoles, you can save the entire CD to the console’s hard drive like you would with a computer. The Playstation 2 was the first video game console to support DVDs though the original Xbox game system also supported DVDs. Every Sony and Microsoft home console released after the Playstation 2 and Xbox 360 supports both DVDs and Blu Ray. None of the Nintendo consoles released to date support the CDs, DVDs or Blu Ray format CDs by design. Nintendo designed them that way on purpose in short.

Getting back on topic, the reason many tech companies and content providers have started phasing out mass producing physical media isn’t just for cost-cutting and environmental reasons. It’s also because of consumer demand pushing for streaming entertainment. I do think too many people in technologically developed nations are feeling a false sense of security with streaming services in general. Without the internet connection, you lose access to the content.

Even though I like to buy movies, TV shows, music and video games digitally I always download it to a compatible device when I do. iTunes allows you to both download media and stream it. You can stream it without downloading but you can also download it so you can enjoy it without an internet connection. Outside that, there are no restrictions on your end. This is how it should be for ALL content providers whenever possible. Sony and Nintendo do not have download restrictions for content you purchase digitally. If for example you reformat the hard drive on your Playstation 3, you can redownload everything at no extra cost to you.

Microsoft only allows you to download purchased content a certain number of times. I know because I ran into this problem when I bought my Xbox 360 in 2009. Prior to this, I had a Microsoft Zune account and so I had movies, TV shows and music I had purchased prior to getting my Xbox 360. I was on the phone with tech support and they ultimately added a $200 credit to my Xbox Live Account to compensate for the lost media. A later system update allowed me to eventually download the media I lost access to though.

There IS one drawback to both streaming and digital downloads that can’t be ignored: When the service or online store itself goes offline or shuts down, you lose it forever. Nintendo eventually shut down online services for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii consoles as of 2015. What this means is you can no longer connect to the internet with either game system. They shut them down because by then, few people were using it and it was no longer cost effective to keep online services going.

Samsung BD-C6900 review: Samsung BD-C6900 - CNET

…Eventually, this will be true of current online services including websites and online stores. I do think tech companies and consumers should start planning and preparing for this eventuality. Mass Digital Storage for personal use needs to be invested in. Blu Ray Players, DVD Players and CD Players should all be getting built with internal storage capabilities for digitally saving media to them. On the cheap end, they should all start with 250GB but higher end ones would offer as much as 4TB. How it would work is you put the Blu Ray or DVD in and you can save the content to media player an can then watch without the disc in it.

Video Game consoles and Computers already allow this so it’s not a new idea. In order to run a computer game, you need to install it first. When you buy physical copies of a game for one of the current-gen consoles (Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch) it must be installed and often updated before you can actually play it. So no this is not a new idea or concept at all.

I know this was quite an overwhelming topic to get into but it’s extremely important for those who like or use mass media make themselves aware. As for what you should do now. I reccommend either buying physical media or doing digital downloads as much as possible. If you have an active subscription to a streaming service like Netflix or an online game like World of Warcraft, pay attention to what is going on in the world and try to plan accordingly. If you get notice a streaming service will be shutting down, stop your subscription if any though they will usually stop future payments on their end.

If you have a favorite movie or TV Show that you like to watch and it can be purchased, try to buy it as soon as possible instead of streaming it. Same with video games. Nintendo announced a few weeks ago they will be shutting down the eShop for the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U in Latin America this summer. I have two 3DS consoles so I know there will come a time in the near future when I will no longer be able to use the eShop. It’s now considered a “legacy” console and more so given no new games have been released for it in about a year’s worth of time. So, I am planning for the eventual time the eShop in North America will be shut down.

Times are changing and folks need to start planning accordingly. I’ll speak more to this in an upcoming post and it’s a topic I covered before: Doomsday Prep. Most Americans laughed at them on TV. They’re the ones laughing now.

Ok so I just tested positive for COVID-19   Leave a comment

I figure I break the news from now.

I was feeling sick for most of the week. I spoke to my doctor Friday morning and he asked me to come in to be tested. I got the test this morning and it came back positive.

Time for some Q&A ^_^

Q. What was getting tested like?
A. Very quick. The doctor swabbed the back of my throat. Only took a moment to get a culture. It was uncomfortable for me but not because of the process itself. I get muscle cramps in my jaw and neck when I open my mouth really wide. Had I known, I would have done it in advance.

Q. How long will you be self-quarantined?
A. My doctor said I likely had it for at least a week prior to being tested. So, I was told to self-quarantine for another 7 days while my family must self-quarantine for 14 days. I plan to self-quarantine for 14 days personally to be safe though.

Q. How did you get it or how do you think you got it?
A. My mother and I both believe I got it from another member of the household who was sick the week before. My doctor said it’s likely everyone else in the house is COVID-19 Positive though as of right now, I am the only one who got tested and had it confirmed.

Q. How will you handle daily needs?
A. I live in a house with 3 bathrooms. I will use one and my other family members will use the others. As for food, I have a mini fridge. A family member will bring meals to my bedroom door for me. I also have my medications in my room already.

Q. How are you feeling now?
A. A lot better than I did two days ago physically. I had trouble breathing most of Thursday starting in the afternoon, Things got so bad, I had to go to a pharmacy to get a new rescue inhaler since I have asthma. That helped get me through the night. It’s what led to me getting tested Friday.

…Ok, I think that covers everything worth talking about for now. I plan to provide updates on this blog my health so free free to subsscibe if you haven’t already.

I do not anticipate my updates to this blog will be severely impacted.

Ok so my desktop computer just died (UPDATED)   Leave a comment

Update 3/19/2020:

Thanks to a kind neighbor, I now have the use of a laptop PC at home for at least few weeks. Just in time, since I have a LOT of stuff to cover on my Politics and News blog in particular. If one thing being proposed in Washington happens, I’ll have the money to buy a new computer in a few weeks!

My original message which I typed from my iPad is below:

I’m emotionally devastated.

Due to this sudden loss of my only remaining working computer, new posts to ALL of my blogs will be on hold indefinitely. I have no income right now and I have no idea when I will be able to get a new computer.

In 2014, I decided to have a 2-computer policy: Have both a desktop and a laptop at the same time. When my laptop stopped working in 2018, I still had my desktop PC. It was a toaster of a machine even back then and started showing the signs it wouldn’t last more than another year.

…Talk about a new reality.

The silver lining for me is my data loss will be minimal. I took the hard drives out of my laptops planning to get an Enclosure for them at a later time. I also have an external hard drive and though I haven’t backed anything up to it in about 2 years, most of what I bought for my computer I can easily download again from iTunes, Amazon Music, the Blizzard App and Steam.

I typed this from my iPad using the Bluetooth keyboard I bought for it for those who are wondering. When the opportunity to get a new computer comes again–hopefully sooner than later–I will probably buy a desktop first and then a laptop.

Speaking of. Washington is working on getting a financial relief check of at least $1,000 USD to everyone in the U.S. within 2 weeks so if it happens, I will use the money from that to buy a new desktop as well as a desk and office chair which I’ve also needed. My desk and chair I’ve had since I moved to Hyde Park from Dorchester 7 years ago. Both are falling apart as well.

If anyone wants to help toward these things, feel free to let me know.

DoubleList is clearly aggressively working to fill a certain void   2 comments

Image result for DoubleList

…And specifically the void caused by CraigsList’s Personals section being taken offline. This was done in reaction to the FOSTA SESTA law signed two years back. The two Gay Men who created DoubleList two years ago made the website as a spiritual successor to CraigsList Personals’ Casual Encounters sub-section specifically. For those who may not know, that sub section was used specifically to find people to have a sexual encounter with. Yes, these guys made a whole website only for that purpose. For free.

The irony of DoubleList is they clearly have strict guidelines. They are NOT messing around and they can’t if they don’t want to go to jail or be the first people to be sued under FOSTA. The site’s been online for almost two years now so clearly they are doing something right. Unlike CraigsList, the site is manned by actual people and not just scripting programs.

The Co-founders revealed in an interview most of the posts they’ve rejected were either obvious sex work or people being too profane. They want the site to be welcoming to those who are not sex addicts obviously. CraigsList’s Casual Encounters Section was a free for all. People could post whatever they wanted and get away with it on Casual Encounters. On DoubleList you not only can’t use certain words in an Ad title but you can’t include pics of private parts either. All posts are prescreened before they’re posted as well.

The Sex Work concern is part of why FOSTA came to be. The other concern is Sex Trafficking. While yes the overwhelming majority of those who used CraigsList Personals, Backpage and other websites for Sex Work (or free sexual encounters of course) are consentual, it’s also true some were not consentual. So, Congress was forced to take action to hold websites accountable for when people use their websites to commit a crime or in this case Sex Trafficking. DoubleList has promised stiff penalties for anyone who tries to circumvent the site’s filtering system for sex work.

I made an account with Double List two years back to check it out but after finding out the sole purpose of the website is to find a sexual encounter, I’m pretty disappointed. It had the potential to be so much more than that and it’s a shame to know that the website’s main purpose is just for people to find someone to have a sexual encounter with. If DoubleList promoted more than just sexual encounters, I think it would generate more traffic and acceptence overall.

Given the website just introduced three new sections–two of which are Sexually Explicit–I do think a Pay Wall will be coming. The site will need to come up with a way to keep teenagers and kids from accessing the site’s sexually explicit content and many kids have cellphones these days. I mention that because the site uses text verification to make an account. The website does emphasize common sense when arranging meetups. Mostly around personal safety and of course, safe sex.

I still can’t believe the site has no barriers in place to keep anyone from wandering in like I did. This would not have been possible 20 years ago even with CraigsList Personals. It would be more than fair to say DoubleList succeeded where Backpage, CraigsList Personals and even Ashley Madison all failed: They have succeeded in building an entire website where one can arrange sexual encounters for free AND normalized it. To me, this is one of those situations where having your way isn’t necessarily a good thing. Given today’s society is telling everyone they can do whatever they think or want, I expect worse to come.

Here’s my thoughts on the ongoing Chicken Sandwich War between several Fast Food Giants   Leave a comment

Image result for Fried Chicken Sandwiches

They say war is bad for business unless it’s a Food War. Actually I just made that up ^_^

All of the top US-based Fast Food chains have chosen Chicken Sandwiches as the subject of an ongoing Food War they have pulled the public into since the summer and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Excluding the above sandwiches, I have sampled Chicken Sandwiches from almost all of the top chains. Before I get to that, I do want to confirm almost all the sandwiches are a variant of the Friend Chicken Sandwich.

Ok here we go. I used pictures of how they really look instead of the promotional pictures for the sake of accuracy. I am also only including sanwiches that a part of the regular menu BUT not the smaller value menu sanwiches

Burger King

Image result for Burger King Classic Chicken Sandwich

Image result for Burger King Crispy Chicken Sandwich

Image result for Burger King Spicy Chicken Sandwich

Image result for Burger King Grilled Chicken Sandwich

In order they are the Classic Chicken Sandwich, Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Spicy Chicken Sandwich and Grilled Chicken Sandwich (formally known as the Chicken Whopper). The bread and meat are the main parts of the sandwich while the mayo, iceberg lettuce (which actually has little to no nutritional value believe it or not), onions and tomatoes are toppings included. I have eaten all three myself. BK has released gourmet specialty versions of all four types over the years and currently has a few variations of the Crispy Chicken Sandwich. I always request pickles be added for a little extra crunch.

Of the four, the Spicy Chicken Sandwich is my personal favorite. The breaded patty has a noticable kick but it’s not too overpowering even if you get it with no veggies and no mayo. In other words, I kid could eat it if they wanted to. Adding pickles mitigates the afterburn as well actuallly. Thanks to BK’s current 2 for $6 promotion I just buy two of them instead of a combo, saving money I would’ve spent on Fries and a Drink.

By the way. The chicken patties for the last 3 sandwiches are the same ones used in salads and wraps.

Image result for Mcdonald's McChicken Sandwich

In order they are the Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Classic Chicken Sandwich, Grilled Chicken Sandwich and the McChicken. It’s fairly easy to see what’s in all of them. All of them have Mayo. All but the Classic Chicken also has romaine lettuce mayo. The Classic Chicken Sandwich (3rd picture) has a spicy sauce and pickles and that’s why it looks bigger than the first two. Yes, I add pickles to all. McDs has a McChicken + Small Fries for $3 Deal so you save almost a dollar.

The chicken patties for the first 3 sandwiches are the same ones used in salads and wraps.

Image result for KFC Chicken Sandwich

Image result for KFC Chicken Sandwich

They are the Chicken Little and Crispy Chicken Sandwich. KFC’s market testing or also selling a lot of gimmick sandwiches such as their Donut Sandwich and the Chicken and Waffle Sandwich but I decided to exclude them. KFC has actually only been offering chicken sandwiches for about 25 years now believe it or not. Both types of sandwiches were actually introduced around the same time. They are more known for their fried chicken so…yeah.

Image result for Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich

Image result for Wendy's Chicken Sandwich

Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich is the only thing pictured here that actuallly looks like the promotional pictures as soon as you unwrap it and tastes like it too. I usually add pickles, which brings out the kick from the spice even more Same with the non-spicy version.

The Crispy Chicken Sandwich (pictured) is from the value menu and is one of the options for Wendy’s 4 for $4 Meal (the other 3 being burgers along with a drink, fries and 5-piece chicken nuggets). It’s nothing to call home about and you’ll probably want to add more toppings if you want it to feel filling. I usually add pickles, onions and tomatoes.

Image result for Popeyes Chicken Sandwich

Image result for Popeyes Chicken Po Boy

…I haven’t tried Popeye’s new Chicken Sandwich yet myself but will at some point. The 3 Popeyes in Boston I know of are all hard to get to from where I live so…yeah. No real rush. It looks very similar to MicDonald’s Crispy Chicken Sanwich though with the pickles and sauce. Like everywhere else, there are regular and Spicy versions. As of November 3 2019, it is now a permanent menu item.

From what I’ve been seeing online while getting these pictures, the Chicken Po Boy (second picture) has been discontinued. It was the same as KFC’s old Zinger Sandwich where they used their Chicken Tenders as well as a sub roll as a base with pickles, iceberg lettuce and mayo. It didn’t look as impressive as the Shrimp version and didn’t sell well. It was basically just there as a kosher alternative to the Shrimp version (which I appreciated since I don’t eat Shrimp myself).

Image result for Chick Fil a Chicken Sandwich

The only item listed I not only never have eaten but never will because it’s a corporate chain that touts Christian values and beliefs when it’s convenient for them. I can’t stand that kind of hypocrisy and to this day, I have never given Chick-Fil-A a cent of my money. I tried their food twice and I wasn’t impressed personally. I get those who like the fact the chain encourages Christian Speak and even lets evangelists take over a table in their restaurants all day (provided you stay there) but people go to Fast Food chains specifically so they don’t have to think about things like that. I get those who like it but to each their own.

Of the items listed that I have tried, my personal favorite is Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich followed by Burger King’s version. Presumably, Popeyes’ will round out my Top 3 once I’ve tried it. I do like the McChicken but just when you start getting into it, you’ve finshed eating it. Same with KFC’s Chicken Little. I miss the Zinger Sandwich they had on that note. I LOVED it.

While Wendy’s, Burger King and McDonalds are more known for their burgers, their chicken sandwiches are holding it down. I did rank two of them over KFC and Popeyes, which both specialize in fried chicken so…yeah. Clearly I think they’re doing something really good but that’s just my opinion on the Chicken Sandwich Food War.

Online International Romance Scams continue to grow more sophisticated   Leave a comment

Image result for Online Romance Scams

I recently read this article from and decided to comment on it further.

The above caption is still a pretty reliable way of figuring out fairly quickly if the person on the other side of the screen is really a scammer or someone or just not who they claim to be.

There’s also this:

Image result for online romance scams

…If this looks/feels familiar to you and you’re starting to feel nervous, good. Especially the first two points. Both claims should be met with skepticism especially anyone who claims to be a US Citizen or US Soldier currently living or stationed overseas. That right there should be a giant red flag especially for those claiming to be US Servicepeople: They know they can’t disclose where exactly they are while deployed or what they’re doing. An actual US Soldier knows not to disclose anything that might jeopardize security over an unsecure communication channel like a free cloud-based email address (Gmail. Outlook, etc.) and more so if they are in or near a combat zone.

Anyone who travels overseas on their own dime doesn’t need YOUR help getting back. If they have a problem in the other country, they can contact the US Consulate and they know it. If their passport or other documents are stolen, they can contact local authorities who can put them in touch with the US Consulate. Anyone insisting on you sending them money is likely a scammer plain and simple.

Before I move on, I do want to comment on the last point made above about moving communication outside the website where you make first contact with each other. It’s totally fine to exchange external contact info. No rush of course but that’s fine especially if you’ve given reasonable assurance you’re talking to a genuine person. If you don’t want to exchange contact info up front, just say so. Most real people will be very understanding of that as long as you explain why and more importantly, don’t Ghost on them.

Moving on to this checklist:

Image result for Online Romance Scams

The first one should be a giant red flag. Me personally, I don’t believe in love at first sight. Especially someone I haven’t met in person yet. You should be extremely skeptical of anyone who messages you saying they’re in love with you and want to be with you. More so if that’s first contact. Scammers use a script and will stick to it as well. They know if they open with this, it’ll throw most people off balance and get them to drop their guard.

I covered the next 3 listed above so going to the last point. It’s not too much to ask to voice chat or video chat to confirm you are talking to a real person. Skype, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Google Hangouts. Take your pick. Even better is you don’t need to use your real phone number with all except WhatsApp and it works internationally too. If they come up with every excuse to not voice chat with you, it’s probably because they’re not who they claim to be or where they claim to be. If they can message or email you, they can at least voice chat.

Of course, you can make some exceptions depending on where they are. On Facebook I have contacts who live in The Philippines, South Africa and Tanzania. Most in those countries can barely text let alone voice chat in some cases. If the other person is in North America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia or Israel then they should be able to voice chat with you between having a monthly data plan, Wi-Fi access or both.

I have noticed most scammers prefer to use Yahoo Mail over Outlook (formerly Hotmail) or Gmail. The biggest reason being unlike the other two email providers, you are not asked to provide real information authenticating who you are. For example to make a Google Account these days, you need a cell phone just to make an account. An authenticator code is texted to your cellphone which you must enter to prove you’re a real person and not a bot. The advent of Xbox Live 17 years ago meant all Microsoft Services including Hotmail (now Outlook) were integrated so you had to your personal information in the account.

With Yahoo Mail–which has been around since the internet went public in 1994–you can prettymuch remain anonymous. You can make as many Yahoo email accounts as you want without providing actual personal information. I suspect this is the real reason it has remained a viable option despite the overwhelming popularity of Gmail in the last 16 years. You can just make another Yahoo Mail account once people figure out you’re a scammer and contact them using the new account. My Spam folders say hi so…yeah.

Image result for Online Romance Scams

Again, some of these will probably feel familiar to some of you.

It goes without saying anyone who is able to send you stuff isn’t hurting for money. They do it to get you to trust them into sending them money. On that note, you ever notice the amount of money they ask for steadily increases and the time they’re willing or able to wait steadily decreases? That should tell you something right there. More so given each Relationship Scammer is likely talking to several people at the same time. Their primary reasons for doing so are to get the money and personal info from as many people as possible.

On that note. You should refrain from sharing the following specific types of information on first contact with anyone you meet in an Online Dating situation. More so if you are unable to video chat with the person or they may not be in your home country:

  • Real Name: This is what screen names are for. These days, you can never be too careful. I’m known as Aurabolt on some website and Brendan2k5 on others. Three years ago, I changed my username on Facebook to Lavon Samuel Davis. I will only reveal my real name to people online who I know I will meet in person and only when we’ve met in person. The most anyone needs to know on first contact is your first name anyways.
  • Date of Birth: Most can probably correctly guess your exact date of birth just knowing your age. If one of the first things someone asks you is your birthday, don’t tell them the year. Besides, if they know your age they should be able to do the math on their own.
  • Cellphone Number: DO NOT GIVE THIS OUT IMMEDIATELY. This is how you invite spam to be texted to you and worse. I would insist on a website’s/app’s own communication features, Facebook Messenger, Kik or Skype first and then going from there.
  • Household Information: I would be VERY concerned if they start asking you for information about your family. It may sound innocent or just small talk but there is a purpose behind it. The two biggest being they want to try to look up your family members first and they want to see if there is clues in correctly guessing your account passwords in that information second.
  • Income Status: This is what most Relationship Scammers want the most. They want to know what kind of work you do so they can best figure out how to slowly bleed you dry.

Folks need to also be mindful the above information along with your Social Security Number and Address are all they need to open credit cards in your name. This is exactly why you need to be very careful when making first contact online of what you share and what you keep private.

I have some additional information I want to pass along to anyone who in Pinay or Filipina (A woman who is from The Philippines) and is looking for love online with someone who is in the U.S.:

  1. If you’re mainly looking for someone who can provide for you and your family financially, prepare to be VERY disappointed. More so if you are looking for someone with in 10 years of your age. Most Americans are NOT rich and in fact, most Americans can barely keep a roof over their heads.
  2. If you live in The Philippines and you are not working or willing to work, you have no right to expect a man to travel across the world let alone pay for you to travel across the world. It costs about $1,000 USD–about 50,000 PHP–for a round trip plane ticket between Boston and Manila for reference. That’s just talking about the plane ticket. It also costs around same amount for a Marriage Visa for those who may be wondering as well.
  3. If some of your first words are “I need help”, “Can you help me?” or “I need money” I can promise you that you will be rejected almost immediately and most likely either blocked or have your account reported. Nothing turns off potential international relationships faster than for a guy to be told up front you want money from them and you haven’t even met yet. It doesn’t matter if your child needs an organ transplant or is dying in the hospital. It doesn’t matter if you need the money to video or voice call. Again, I can promise you this will guarantee you will be rejected completely and swiftly off the bat.
  4. Having kids from a previous relationship doesn’t disqualify you from love and nor should it. At the same time, you shouldn’t put love before your kids ever. Just be open and honest about being a single mom. Most guys will be very understanding. Most Western Men looking for a Filipino girlfriend or wife already knows the father is likely out of the picture so…yeah.
  5. Filipinos can actually VISIT the U.S. with a Tourist Visa and stay for up to 6 months (3 months up from + additional 3 month extension). In fact, it would make far more sense for both parties involved if you plan to visit the U.S. first.

..,Just some things to be mindful of. Included those 5 tips by reequest from some Filipinos who read this blog on that note ^_^

Online Dating is clearly here to stay. It’s all the more reason for folks to take steps to protect themselves against scammers, crooks and people who are only looking to waste your time. Please be careful out there and more so if you potential love interest is in another country,

The New England Patriots host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Season Opener   Leave a comment

It was a blockbuster game even before news Antonio Brown signed with the Patriots 24 hours earlier broke the internet and possibly broke the hearts of fans of the other 31 NFL teams (LOL!). It would be more than fair to say–barring the unforeseeable of course–the New England Patriots just ensured they will repeat as Super Bowl Champions this year. The last team to win the Super Bowl back to back? The Patriots of course and they did it in 2003 and 2004. No other team has done it since because of how difficult it is in American Football. The Patriots would go on to curb-stomp the Steelers 33-3 after which said team had “no comment” to their former star Wide Receiver signing with the Patriots the day before.

The timing of Antonio Brown’s rape alliegations is pretty convenient but don’t take that to mean I’m hand-waving the charges against him. It comes the day after his signing with the Patriots becomes official and the charges are from his former trainer as well. No one is forgetting Patriots team owner Robert Kraft has an open criminal case related to prostitution either. Two birds, one stone. Brown now being forced away from the team to deal with the litigation will have zero effect on the Patriots moving forward. I would think differently if this happened toward the end of the season or during the postseason. As for the charges filed against Brown, it would be inappropriate for me to comment without knowing the details.

The Los Angeles Clippers win the Kawhi Leonard Sweepstakes and also get Paul George via Trade   Leave a comment

Image result for Russell Westbrook Trade

The second-biggest offseason domino has finally fallen. Kawhi Leonard is going home to Los Angeles…as a member of the Clippers. Not only that, he’s bringing fellow hometown All Star Paul George with him. News broke overnight after the entire NBA world was kept waiting all week for Leonard’s decision to be known. By daybreak, the NBA world got hit with another blockbuster announcement: Clippers and the Oklahoma City Thunder agreed to a trade that will send Paul George to LA.

Odds makers updated their predictions favoring the Clippers to go all the way to the NBA Finals. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis being joined by DeMarcus Cousins, The Battle for Los Angeles Basketball is on!

…I would be remiss if I did not mention longtime OKC Superstar Russell Westbrook.

The latest reports indicate he and his agent plan to meet with OKC executives soon about his future and it’s believed he will be traded. Westbrook has played his entire career with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Clouds of doubt surrounded Westbrook after former team mate Kevin Durant left for the Golden State Warriors and James Harden, whose trade to the Houston Rockets many viewed as a mistake emerged as an All Star.

When Paul George elected to sign a longterm contract with the Thunder, a lot of the doubts about Westbrook being able to play with another All Star team mate finally went away.  With PG-13 now gone after two years with OKC, signs point to Westbrook being on the move and that means the Thunder will be in full rebuild mode come next season.

Let the speculation on where Westbrook could go commence!

Breaking NBA Free Agency News: The Brooklyn Nets win the Kevin Durant Sweepstakes and other News   Leave a comment

Image result for Kevin Durant Brooklyn Nets

….I may be up until midnight today LOL.

1 hour before Free Agency officially begins, All Star forward and 2-time NBA Champion Kevin Durant announced he will sign a 4 year, $164 Million contract with the Brooklyn Nets. He will miss his first year as a member of the Nets due to the injury he suffered during the 2018-19 NBA Finals. He will be joined by Kyrie Irving (Free Agent, played last 2 seasons with the Boston Celtics), who will sign a 4 year $142 Million contract with the Nets as well as DeAndre Jordan (Free Agent, played with the Dallas Mavericks and ended the season with the New York Knicks last season).

The Nets had the cap space to sign 3 Max Contract Players but the caviat is they would automatically have to renounce the rights to D’Angelo Russell who is now an Unrestricted Free Agent. D-Lo’s looking to sign with the T-Wolves next which is cool since Derrick Rose–remember him?–intends to sign with the Detroit Pistons. Actually wait forget I said that. Looks like D-Lo’s gonna be a Warrior this coming season. Se below for more on that.

Thus, the Nets’ 6 year oddyssey of having their draft picks held hostage by the Celtics is finally over. The Nets sold their future to Boston as per the terms of the trade that sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett from Boston to Brooklyn 6 years ago. Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are three of the many players drafted with the Nets’ picks. It’s considered the most lopsided trade in sports history for a reason!

It would be more than fair to say the balance of power has shifted.

The Warriors are basically the NBA’s version of the New England Patriots right now in which it’s assumed they’ll contend if not return to the NBA Finals next year. They did it 3 times in a row without Durant so…yeah. Klay Thompson, who was injured in what ended up being the final game of the NBA Finals may return for the second half half of the coming season. We’ll see.

The next biggest domino is easily Kawhi Leonard. He is reportedly only looking at either the Raptors, who he just won his second NBA Championship with or the Los Angeles Clippers. The Lakers just got Anthony Davis. With Irving and Durant now commited to the Nets, they’ll likely be looking to fill their roster. As of right now they only have 3 signed players: LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Kyle Kuzma (!). No, really.

It would be more than fair to say the New York Knicks are the biggest losers in this blockbuster announcement. The failed to get Irving, Durant, Zion Williamson and just lost DeAndre Jordan. The Knicks last made the playoffs in 2013 (first round exit) and and last won an NBA title back in 1976. A shame that bad luck didn’t rub off on the Yankees, who swept the Red Sox in the London series this weekend.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith had an emotional meltdown likely shared by countless other Knicks fans. He was so emotionally devastated, Knicks officials put out a statement to the effect of “trust the process”. LOL.

Image result for Terry Rozier and Kemba Walker

News broke this morning the Celtics were looking to execute a Sign and Trade involving the Nets and the Charlotte Hornets (which seems to have fallen through). Irving’s obviously gone to Brooklyn and with Kemba Walker coming in, the Celtics threw Michael Jordan an assist to avoid becoming the Nets 2.0 or the 76ers 2.0 (Tanking on purpose). It will be a changing of the guard as Terry Rozier will be going to Charlotte while Kemba Walker, who is in Boston will finalize his 4-year, $141 Million contract with the Celtics. Rozier will sign a 3-year, $58 Million Contract with the Hornets. Rozier showed flashes of how good he could be when he damn-near led the Celtics to the NBA Finals the season before.

Veteran Center Enes Kanter (traded to the Blazers from the Knicks mid-season) is reportedly very interested in the Celtics as well as his current team so we’ll see.

Image result for Kristaps Porzingis Mavs

Rising star Kristaps Porzingis, who was traded from the Knicks mid-season to Dallas has reportedly signed a new 5-year $158 Million Contract with the Mavericks. Porzingis, who was looked at as the protege of now retired NBA Legend Dirk Nowinski (played entire career with the Mavs) appears to be their new franchise superstar.

Minutes after news broke Jimmy Butler is going to sign with the Miami Heat, news broke regarding Veteran Center/Forward Al Horford electing to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. Joel Embiid always said the only player who gives him problems was Al Horford. Now they’re team mates. Horford joining Embiid, Tobias Harris and Ben Simmons makes them instant contenders and makes up for Butler’s departure. Enough to get past the Celtics, Bucks and Heat (with Butler) next year and all 3 teams plus the Nets the year after? I doubt it personally.

D-Lo is now a Warrior.

In exchange for Kevin Durant, the Golden State Warriors have signed D’Angelo Russel to a 4 year, $117 Million Contract via the Brooklyn Nets. The Warriors essentially exchanged Durant forRussell, who made waves last season after the Lakers, who gave up on him sent him to Brooklyn two years ago to make room to sign LeBron James.

There was talk of the Lakers possibly interested in taking him back but the Warriors called the Nets and made the deal on the spot. The Warriors will start the coming season with 3 All Stars in Steph Curry, Draymond Green and now D-Lo. Thompson is projected to return mid-season while the status of DeMarcus Cousins, who is a UFA is currently unknown. He may be signed on with the Warriors longterm given they just pulled the trigger on a trade involving veteran Center Andre Iguodala going to the Memphis Grizzlies. With this move, the Warriors retain their standing as title contenders.

Ok I think I’ll call it a night now. The second-biggest domino that still has yet to fall is of course Kawhi Leonard. Will he stay in Canada or will he go home to Los Angeles and play with the Clippers?  We’ll have to wait and see.

I do agree with analysts who’ve been saying since Free Agency began that for the first time in a while, there is no one team you can look at and say “They’re definitely going to the NBA Finals next season”. That’s how wide open it is. I’ll provide another update once the next round of big moves takes place. It helps most of them happened in the first 6 hours!
